PAPAYA

A tropical evergreen plant from South America that produces fruit one year after planting! Our varieties are all hermaphroditic and therefore do not need a separate plant to pollinate and produce fruit. Papaya fruit is an excellent source of valuable health giving nutrients.
Papaya trees can be container grown! It combines delicious fleshy fruit with the health benefits of vitamin C, vitamin A, folate, potassium, and vitamin E. This tropical delight is sure to please. If you live in a colder area, simply bring it indoors for the winter months. All of your guests over the winter will be delighted by seeing such a unique tree growing in your sun room or living room. When the temperatures began to warm up, place it back outside in the hot summer sun. This exotic plant prefers warmer temperatures, 20′-32’C (70′-90’F), and enjoys most types of well-drained soil. Full sunlight, which will ensure the healthiest growth and maximum fruit production. Fruit yields can vary from 27-36 kg (60-80 lbs) depending on the size of the tree. The low-maintenance papaya does not need pruning to provide you with luscious fruit. The fruit has a thick green skin that ripens to gold. Inside the soft flesh is bright orange and the centre of the fruit is packed with black seeds. The juicy fruit has a musky aroma and a sweet and succulent taste. Even the peppery-flavoured seeds are edible. Ripe fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Papaya is delicious straight from the tree and can also be made into drinks, jellies, pastes, and desserts dried or candied.

Description: Discovered in the mountains of Ecuador, the Babaco (buh-BAH-co) is a hybrid cultivar in the genus Vasconcellea (Vasconcellea × heilbornii; syn. Carica pentagona); a hybrid of Vasconcellea cundinamarcensis (Carica pubescens) and Vasconcellea stipulata. Usually forms a single stem and grows quickly the first year to 5-6 feet, after which fruiting starts. Big, hand-shaped leaves grow to be 18" across. Also called the Mountain Papaya, or Champagne Fruit, the Babaco is an unusual relative with hints of Papaya flavour but without the muskiness. The big, football-shaped fruits taste sort of like pineapple or kiwi, and the juicy flesh is effervescent, hence "champagne fruit". Fruits ripen one at a time throughout the year, averaging 8-10" long & weigh 1-2 lbs (max 4 lbs), and ripen to a bright golden yellow with a terrific fruity aroma! The entire fruit, including the thin skin, is edible. There are no seeds as this is a sterile hybrid. It's relatively low in sugar, so serve with a light dusting of sugar to really bring out the flavour. An attractive addition to platters as the fruit is star-shaped when sliced. Fruit rarely gets mouldy when damaged & any mould doesn't spread. Does best with moderate temperatures. Handles temperatures in the 90s (34'C), but seems to need cooler nights to thrive (below 65'F/18'C). Easily grown in a 10 Gal (40 Lt) pot indoors or out, not needing a lot of sun to thrive. One of the few fruit trees that produces well in bright shade or morning sun. Some shade from hot afternoon sun may be needed. Grow it in ordinary well-draining soil, with regular watering and feeding. An easy, low-maintenance plant in the right conditions. It's as fun to grow as it is to eat! The exotic, palm-like shape of the plant gives it a great tropical look and it makes up to 60 lbs of fruit per year! A hard-to-find tree that is rarely seen for sale.
